Prices
Most prices are fixed in stores. It is acceptable to bargain for more expensive items such as cars, large appliances, and houses. Also, people bargain when buying items at garage sales or outdoor markets.
Most items will include two taxes:
- Federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) -5%
- Provincial Sales Tax (PST) -7%
These taxes are not included on the price tag but are added to the final price at the cash register. Most food items and medications do not have sales tax. Also, there is no PST for clothing for children under 14 years of age.
In Rossburn you can purchase your groceries at the Parkway Co-op.
Convenience stores also have a limited selection of groceries but are more expensive and mainly sell snack foods. They are open later than other stores.
At the Co-op store you can become a member and receive a rebate from your purchases every year. You can shop at Co-op even if you are not a member.
Ethnic specialty foods can be bought in Yorkton at Superstore and in Brandon at the Superstore or Obermaier’s Sausage & Meats (222 Rosser Ave; 1-204-728-0707).
A variety of restaurants serve different types of food. Most are family restaurants where children are welcome. It is customary to tip 10-15% of the total food bill by either leaving the money on the table or adding it to your credit or debit card payment. This in not done at fast-food restaurants.
Many people are using the internet for some purchases, and a credit card is re-quired to make these purchases. Canada has other mail order businesses like Sears that send out catalogues that you can order from.
Rossburn has a Sears Catalogue Order Office located at 27 Main St. North (859-2506).
